It was formed in 1897 from portions of Abbeville and Edgefield counties. Its county seat is the city of Greenwood. Other communities comprising the county include the towns of Hodges, Ninety Six, Troy, and Ware Shoals, as well as Bradley, Cokesbury, Coronaca, and Promised Land.
